OA represents a broad nonprofit coalition of national advocacy organizations across a range of outdoor sports and interests including American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, Access Fund, International Mountain Bicycling Association, Winter Wildlands Alliance, the Mountaineers, the American Alpine Club, the Mazamas, the Colorado Mountain Club, and the Surfrider Foundation.

Each year, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks asks Friends to support special projects and programs that would otherwise go unfulfilled. Gifts help fund these important and critical requests. The desert ecosystems that comprise these parks surprise many with their incredible biodiversity and fragility. Many park flora and fauna are considered rare, threatened, or endangered. 
Friends of Arches and Canyonlands supports the protection of these wild places by protecting dark skies, preserving and protecting vital water resources, and improving human waste disposal in highly sensitive sites. Friends also supports search &amp; rescue (SAR) supplies and equipment, as well as SAR training to ensure safe recreation in the park year round.

The Mojave Desert Land Trust works tirelessly to conserve desert habitats and ecosystems through land acquisition and stewardship, plant conservation and restoration, outreach and advocacy, and education. Since 2006, MDLT has conserved more than 100,000 acres of prime desert habitat, forever weaving together national parks, national monuments, wilderness areas, and wildlife linkage corridors. 
The organization works closely with a broad range of desert community members and visitors, as well as with local, state, and federal agencies. MDLT offers hands-on learning and volunteer opportunities to residents and visitors of the desert.

It's Climbing Season in Moab - Here's What You Need to Know

Tis the (Climbing) Season

No more chasing the shade this year. It&#8217;s climbing season in the Utah desert, with ideal sending temps and fewer cars at the trailheads in Moab. Whether you&#8217;re just venturing into outdoor climbing or you’re a regular weekend warrior, climbing in Moab is a rite of passage for climbers of all abilities.
&nbsp;
Types of Climbing in Moab
Moab and the surrounding Utah desert offer multitudes of climbing adventures, from perfect first-time top-ropes to more skilled sport, trad, and boulder routes. 
Trad climbing, or traditional climbing, involves carrying and placing protection through cams, nuts, etc. rather than clipping into pre-placed bolts. Trad climbers have to find the route that works best for their gear and their abilities. 
Sport climbing differs from trad climbing with its pre-bolted routes. Because of this, routes are pre-determined and climbers clip into the bolts as they ascend the wall. 
Bouldering involves climbing shorter routes that involve fewer moves. Rather than wearing a harness and attaching to a rope, boulderers carry crash pads to their climbing sites and use them as softer landing pads when they descend (or fall) off of a bouldering problem.

A Note About Climbing in Moab
As is true with any outdoor activity, we firmly believe in leaving our natural areas better than we found them. This is especially true within the Moab climbing community. 
Moab and the surrounding areas are home to ancient petroglyphs, first left on the stone by Native peoples almost 8,000 years ago. These pieces of rock art should always be avoided when climbing, and no climbers may establish routes close to these rock surfaces.
It’s also always good to avoid sandstone after it rains, as the rock is fragile and can break easily.
Lastly, always check raptor conditions as some climbing areas will close down during raptor mating season to protect these special birds, often in the spring.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is the largest landholder in the U.S., managing 245 million acres of public lands and some of the most spectacular and prized landscapes for outdoor recreation. The BLM manages these lands for multiple use, which includes extraction, development, and logging, but also conservation and outdoor recreation. Less than 15% of BLM lands are protected through the BLM’s National Conservation Lands system, making it even more important that the BLM can manage multiple use lands sustainably.
BLM lands are among the most cherished landscapes for outdoor recreationists. 81 million people a year visit BLM lands, and BLM lands have millions of acres to explore with fewer permits, restrictions, and crowds than their National Park counterparts. Until June 20, the BLM is looking for feedback on a proposed Public Lands Rule, which could be enormously influential in supporting conservation and preserving outdoor recreation values on our public lands.
The proposed Public Lands Rule offers real ways for the BLM to balance conservation with extraction and development on the land it manages. The BLM’s mission is to “sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations,” but historically the BLM has prioritized extraction over conservation. The Public Lands Rule is an effort to give the BLM the tools it needs to manage for conservation and for the long-term. Part of BLM’s mandate—“sustained yield”—explicitly recognizes that resources need to be managed sustainably, but too often, BLM has been unable to ensure that multiple-use lands are managed to provide their continued benefits into the future. This rulemaking will help ensure that all BLM lands—not just areas with special designations like Wilderness or Wild and Scenic Rivers—are managed sustainably.
The rule would direct land managers to make determinations of landscape health by applying its “fundamentals of land health” decision-making tool, which is currently only used on grazing leases. By evaluating landscape health at scale, the agency would be better able to direct restoration activities, designate Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs, a BLM conservation designation), and prioritize protection of “intact landscapes.” Throughout this process, BLM has an opportunity to more comprehensively incorporate recreation, both to protect recreation values and to use these values to further drive conservation.
One significant piece of the Public Lands Rule is a new conservation leasing program. The rule proposes that when oil and gas, mining, and other extractive industries develop public lands and their activities unavoidably damage the landscape, industry would be required to do compensatory mitigation work—meaning that they must pursue restoration activities in other areas. The Public Lands Rule’s conservation leasing program would allow these restoration activities to occur more readily on public lands. We will be asking BLM to ensure that this program is broad enough to embrace projects with both a restoration and recreation purpose.
Until June 20, the BLM is seeking public comment, and we can’t emphasize enough how important these comments will be. A few powerful extractive industries and some lawmakers in the House have already mounted objections to the rule. The BLM—as well as your elected officials—need to hear that Americans want to see conservation, recreation, and sustainability made a priority. Outdoor Alliance, along with many other conservation and recreation organizations, will be submitting comments to the BLM with support and feedback on the rule, but your voice can shape the future of public land management.
We’ve made it easy to submit a comment to regulations.gov, with a sample comment below. Alongside emphasizing your support for the Public Lands Rule, you can attend a <a href="https://www.blm.gov/public-lands-rule">public meeting</a> or take two minutes to ask the BLM to look for opportunities to incorporate recreation into what they are doing, both as a reason to protect places and to protect them in a way that embraces sustainable recreation.

Experience all the wonders of Moab, from its massive rock formations in Arches National Park to the mesas and buttes carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Then it’s time to start trekking the 300-plus miles southwest. 
Your first stop is a 45-minute drive northwest to Sego Canyon, a well-preserved ghost town where you’ll find a plethora of prehistoric rock art dating as far back as 7,000 B.C. Explore the extraordinary ancient petroglyphs, then drive 45 minutes west to the man-made <a href="https://geology.utah.gov/map-pub/survey-notes/geosights/crystal-geyser/">Crystal Geyser</a>, one of only six cold-water geysers in the world. Bask in the beautiful display of orange and white travertine rock formations, which stand next to the east bank of the Green River. 
Two and a half hours west, on I-70, you’ll find <a href="https://mystichotsprings.com/">Mystic Hot Springs</a> in Monroe, a resort and campground that feels like a throwback to the days of the flower child. Buy a soaking pass and relax in the natural pools of hot mineral water. Once you’ve cleared your head and dried your body, head an hour southwest to <a href="https://thecreameryutah.com/">The Creamery</a> in Beaver, Utah, to fuel up on a two-cheese grilled cheese sandwich and a scoop of bourbon-pecan ice cream.
A quick 50-minute drive south is your next stop: the <a href="https://www.bard.org/">Utah Shakespeare Festival</a>. The Tony Award-winning theater, located on the campus of Southern Utah University, presents plays (we recommend buying tickets in advance) from Shakespeare and other noted playwrights every June through October. If you can, take in one of the bard’s classics staged on an outdoor replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. 
From there, you’re just 45 minutes away from <a href="https://autocamp.com/zion/">AutoCamp Zion</a>, continuing AutoCamp’s tradition of blending the all-American camping experience with the service and design of a boutique hotel. Complete your adventure by taking in the iconic red-rock landscape and the on-property Virgin River. Explore Zion National Park’s historic landmarks, including The Narrows and Angel&#8217;s Landing (though a hike Hidden Canyon is an AutoCamp favorite). After you take in those extraordinary sights, you’ll be ready to head back to AutoCamp Zion’s eatery The Kitchen (opening in June) for a double burger or cauliflower-crust pizza. Then retire to your Airstream, enjoying our luxury amenities surrounded by Utah’s natural beauty.

A Fireside Chat with Cliford Mervil

Cliford Mervil is redefining outdoor photography.
We sat down with Cliford to learn more about his methods, his perfect adventure, and what inspires him to stay out there.
~
FS: Where do you find the most ease in the outdoors? What gives you that sense of *exhale*?
CM: I love the desert. It&#8217;s just one of those places. Whenever I&#8217;m driving down to California, I try to take the south routes just so I can stop in the desert for a few days. There&#8217;s nothing out there for miles and it just kind of draws you in. I&#8217;ve been to places where there&#8217;s beautiful big mountains and you can kind of get lost in the mountains – but the desert just makes you think. I find myself reflecting on everything because it&#8217;s just nothing out there and the kind of feeling it brings, just staring into the void.
FS: I think that&#8217;s a perfect way to put it. It&#8217;s almost like that desert landscape is so vast and open that it puts your mind in that same framework. 
CM: Yeah, it just slows you down. Because in the big mountains, there&#8217;s just so much to see – your eyes are all over the place, but out in the desert, it’s just that one point and you can stay in focus. Monument Valley is one of my favorite spots to stop in and just camp out for two days and stand out and think and plan.
FS: You&#8217;ve worked with so many different outdoor brands and gone on these huge trips to the mountains and in these places where really extreme things are happening. What do you think the word “adventure” really means and do you think it’s an approachable concept that anyone can access? How would you define accessible adventure, or maybe redefine it?
CM:  To me, adventure can be anywhere. It can be in your backyard, it can be down the trail. Adventures are just what&#8217;s new to you. An adventure is discovering new things, whether it’s a trail you’ve walked down a million times but you’ve never stopped to take it in, or even your own backyard. Just slowing down and actually looking around and enjoying the place in the moment that you&#8217;re in. 
I do love mountaineering. I love the challenges that it brings and the adventure of having a sense that I&#8217;m doing something I thought was impossible. Or moments like Boundary Waters where you leave everything behind and relax and slow down. To me that&#8217;s also adventure – it&#8217;s whatever you discover that&#8217;s new to you. 
And I do like type two fun. The moments that suck in that moment but later on, you can just kind of laugh at.
FS: It’s refreshing to talk to someone that can see both sides of adventure –the summits that people look at and say “That seems crazy for me” right alongside finding adventure in the ordinary. 
What advice would you give those that are new to the outdoors, or haven’t had that life experience yet of spending time outside?
CM: You need to start small in the outdoors. It doesn&#8217;t have to be somewhere cool just because you see a lot of pictures on Instagram about it. Start small and go out in your own backyard. Go to your local trails, state park, or national forest. Do a lot of research around what you’re about to do so you feel ready.

Choose your own Moab adventure! The desert is your oyster, with two national parks just a short drive away, the Colorado River within striking distance, and world-class state parks surrounding you. <li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.nps.gov/arch/index.htm">Arches National Park</a>: It might be impossible to see every arch in Arches in one day, but you can certainly try. </li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://www.nps.gov/cany/index.htm">Canyonlands National Park</a>: Each of the four districts in Canyonlands has its own unique landscape and attractions, so pick the one that interests you the most.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/dead-horse/">Dead Horse Point State Park</a>: Enjoy breathtaking views of the Colorado River and iconic shots of the river canyons. </li>

Explore some local history by seeking out Moab rock art. You can see ancient pictographs and petroglyphs at places like <a href="https://www.visitutah.com/places-to-go/parks-outdoors/bears-ears-national-monument/newspaper-rock-and-the-indian-creek-scenic-byway">Newspaper Rock</a> and the Kane Creek Rock Art Panel. Respect those that came before us by not touching the rock or disturbing the historical sites.

SATURDAY, 5PM
Wash off the day with a dip in our Moab hotel pool (or a soak in our hot tub), or head back to your hotel room for a hot shower. Enjoy live music on the back deck or revisit your favorite brew at Gear + Beer. Or, head into Moab for some local fare.
